Friend Ship

I have always grown up in predominantly light neighborhoods. Meaning, I am surrounded by a majority of white people, which is reflected in my friendships. I grew up in Park Slope. Until I came to Poly Prep in verbalise Ridge, Brooklyn, that was every last(predicate) I had ever experienced. I have two crush friends who are my age, Rina and Arlene. Both Rina and Arlene come from the Caucasian consort and have non been exposed as well much of anything else. They too were raised in predominantly white neighborhoods. Rina, who is from Albania, looks at emotional state with a certain opinion and is very judgmental at times. Arlene, who is Italian, is more open than Rina; however, her family is not. I came into their life when we were five. At five, in elementary school, all there was to a person was dissimulation -- either black or white. In their white world, I am their black friend. Since five, I have been struggling against not being the typical black friend of my two white best friends. This is not an image I want for myself, notwithstanding one completely beneath my control. Whether I agree with it or not they still listen to the critiques they hear in the intelligence information about young black children, what their families say, what they read online, and what they witness in life for themselves.

Whether they admit this or not, I know separately and everything they hear makes an imprint on their brains, and they see me with tainted vision, up to now as best friends. This is my struggle. My expected role is the African- American best friend who just does not follow the path of the stereotypical black girl. I just want to be the friend, no color labels. These stereotypes are not true. In my family, the way I conduct myself, is the stereotype. My parents have always tried to fork out the best of the best for my sister and I, placing us in the finest institutions of Brooklyn, NY.
