Fowler believes that the American Pyle is politically naïve, expansive
and willing to hurt anyone that will get in his way of his goals.
But you dont really get a sense of this until further in the book.
The characterization of Pyle is more baffling to judge. Green is trying to take hold a balance of intellect between the two characters â" both Pyles American idealism and Fowlers European cynicism are less than perfect in the end â" just the balance is in Fowlers in the end. It is not difficult to feel sympathetic when Pyle is talking about his political idealism or how he feels about Phoung, but it seems almost impossible to maintain that sympathy when he kills civilians without hesitation or thought.
