The Yellow Wallpaper
Charlotte Perkins Gilman
The short story, The Yellow Wallpaper, compose by Charlotte Perkins Gilman was rootage published in 1899 and is the journal of Jane who is sort of ill with what is regarded as temporary nervous depression (Gilman, 1899). She is interpreted away on holiday by her husband, and kept in a room where she is meant to be healing. However, she finds herself distracted by the cover in the room, and begins a downward spiral into complete psychosis as her perception of and relationship with the paper evolves. The relationship with the yellow wallpaper is not the only thing that changes, as she soon begins to retard distinct changes in her husband, her sister-in-law, and herself. She is compelled to unlock the secret of the wallpaper, at both cost, during her 3-month retreat.
The story is set in a large terra firma house in England. Removed from the village, but in its own right quite busy. The house is at first hauntingly enchanting, and stimulates Janes ever-questioning mind. She soon finds herself sequestered to a single room, where her husband, a physician, to regain her strength, keeps her.
She is instantly drawn to the yellow wallpaper, a mangled and tattered adornment of the room, which gives testimony to the previous life the house held. The room, otherwise open, leaves her feeling trapped and scared as she begins to see distressing patterns and affects in the wallpaper, spawning a true obsession.
John is Janes husband. He is a physician, and is treating her for what he believes to be no illness at all. He infantilizes her through the way he speaks, and treats her more as a pet than as a wife or an equal. John is away most every day, and some nights attend to his duties as a physician. When he is present in their room, he is often quelling her worry over the wallpaper. Johns sister, Jennie comes to stay with the couple, to help look after Jane and her child.
