In the story Necklace, Mathilde was being portrayed as a simple woman, who was natural into a family of clerks. She did not hold a high favorable status. She was often upset for not being able to snip off well and live in luxury. A woman of this diverseness is designed perfectly for the purpose of a tragic heroâ€"being imperfect but not too bad. And as Aristotle mentioned, it is the plot and character that weighed most out of the six traits in a tragedy. Maupassant captured Mathiles thoughts and actions that led up to the plot, for without her thoughts there would be nothing to drive her actions, thus there would be no plot.
