I was born and raised in a small Midwestern t stimulate that was predominantly white. To see a member of a contrasting race was a ancient occurrence. All throughout my elementary, junior high, and high school career, I was able to count the number of African American students on one hand, and I had never even met an Asian American student. Hispanic students were a bit more common, but lock up only a handful compared to the masses of white students. It was always rather awkward for that person in my class who was designate as the disastrous squirt or the Hispanic kid when issues of race would appear in our texts.
After I receive from high school, I moved to a bigger city to attend a large college, and I received a major wake up call. I was suddenly receptive to people from all different cultural backgrounds, living in a dorm building with them and taking classes with them, and I was blow out of the water at how little I actually knew about the sphere and the people in it. Sadly, my experience is shared with millions of Americans who grew up in a sort of bubble in which multiculturalism is non-existent.
There has been a great deal debate over the subject of multicultural education for decades. The close to prominent viewpoints on the matter come from western traditionalists, afro-centric groups, and multiculturalists.
