In both Yekl and The trade Bridegroom, short stories by Abraham Cahan, the protagonists leave behind their nice town life in eastsideern Europe in exchange for urban life on the Lower East Side of New York City. They must change their outward shows, as well as their inner values and motivations. They are conflicted by the restraints of the Old World, and the temptation of the New World. Some characters willingly court the New World traditions, eager to experience a forward-looking life, while other cling to Old World traditions, afeared(predicate) to lose ken of their past.
Yekl, the protagonist of Yekl leaves behind his wife and newfangled son in Russia in order to come to America. He settles on the Lower East Side and works as a cloak maker. He plans to earn enough property to bring his wife and son to New York to live with him. However, Yekl is tempted by the opportunity and freedom of his new life, and delays their arrival. Yekl now indispensabilitys to be called Jake, and able in with the Yankees. He shaves his beard, avoids speaking Yiddish, and becomes a fan of American pastimes such as boxing, and dancing. Jake soon finds that he has many womanly admirers, and is enjoying his life as a single man in America.
News from Russia arrives that Jakes father has passed away. Jake suddenly feels guilty, and sends the money for his wife Gitl and son Yosele to finally join him in America. Upon his wifes arrival, Jake is annoyed with her Old World habits. When he first sees Gitl, he is very disappointed: รข€¦his heart had sunk at the sight of his wifes uncouth and un-American appearance. She was slovenly dolled up in a brown jacket and skirt of a grotesque cut, and her hair was concealed under a voluminous wig of a pitch-black hue (34). Gitls appearance is a stark contrast to the American women Jake has grown modify to seeing during his time in America.
